Clinical Presentation
The technologist is called in at 6:00 am to perform a Tc99m-MDP bone scan. Because unit doses are not available, the radiopharmaceutical must be made from a kit, and quality control needs to be performed.
• Radionuclidic purity must be checked after elution of the generator. This is the fraction of the total radioactivity present in a radiopharmaceutical that contains the desired radionuclide.
• Example: molybdenum 99 is a radionuclidic impurity found in Tc99m pertechnetate.
• Testing method: dose calibrator
• Allowable limits: < 0.15 µCi of Mo99 per mCi of Tc99m at the time of administration. Because of the longer half-life of Mo99, this ratio changes with time.
• Adverse effects: increased radiation dose to the patient
