Women in the very early stages may not even be aware that they are pregnant and therefore merely asking them to confirm that they are not pregnant is unreliable. A more accurate method is to establish the first day of the onset of the last menstrual period and record this on the request card. The patient should sign to affirm that the date has been recorded correctly. Individual reproductive status can then be calculated and a form of risk assessment used to determine the benefit/risk of proceeding with the examination based on local guidelines and further discussion with the patient.
