49 Aggressive versus benign bone processes


The following table of x-rays summarizes features of benign and aggressive lytic (destructive) processes in bone. These are areas of increased lucency in bone. Remember that aggressive processes include infection as well as tumour (see Chapters 50 and 53).

Edge/zone of transition

The edge of the lesion is sharply defined and may be sclerotic – of higher density – as in this case (arrows). The edge of the lesion can be referred to as the zone of transition.
