Terminology
Group of diseases characterized by deposition of abnormal protein (amyloid) in various tissues
Primary: Due to monoclonal plasma cell dyscrasia
Secondary: Associated with chronic inflammatory processes
Classification: By particular type of protein deposition (e.g., light chain = “amyloidosis AL”)
Imaging
Small bowel wall thickening and hypomotility in patient with chronic illness
Liver and spleen: Enlarged, hypodense
Diminished contrast enhancement
Kidneys
Acute disease = enlarged kidneys
Chronic disease = small kidneys
