60 Brodie’s abscess Fig. 60.1A This radiograph demonstrates a lucent lesion in the distal femoral metaphysis, with a slightly sclerotic border. This is a Brodie’s abscess. Background Brodie’s abscess is caused by subacute osteomyelitis. It occurs in children – the age range affected is wide. Infection can spread to bone from a distant site of origin, via the haematogenous route. This is a similar mechanism to that seen in osteomyelitis. Clinical features Insidious in onset. There may be several months of symptoms before the diagnosis is made. Lower limbs are more commonly affected than the upper limbs.
