Background COPD refers to the combination of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is a very common condition, and smoking is the commonest cause. This is not intended to be an exhaustive account of this very large topic, rather an account of the plain film findings in this condition. The on-call doctor (usually medicine or A&E) will commonly admit these patients with an infective exacerbation causing wheezing and breathlessness.
