Background Discitis refers to infection of the intervertebral disc. It is an important condition with a relatively high mortality rate, in the region of 5%. It can affect children and adults, the peak age being 50. Discitis can occur postoperatively or spread to the disc haematogenously. Staphylococcus aureus is a common pathogen. TB (tuberculous discitis) is another common cause, particularly in certain ethnic groups. Clinical features Onset may be insidious and clinical features non-specific, especially in tuberculous discitis. Symptoms Symptoms include localized back pain and fever.
