39 Emphysematous cystitis
Background
This condition has the same aetiology as emphysematous pyelonephritis (Chapter 40). It is commoner in patients with diabetes and is caused by gas-forming organisms. It has a high untreated mortality rate, and the plain film may be the only available clue to this diagnosis.
