Background This is a rare but life-threatening condition, with a reported mortality of about 40% [1]. If you recognize the radiological features promptly and start the right treatment you could save a life. The condition is caused by gas-forming organisms that give rise to an upper urinary tract infection. It is commoner in people with diabetes and can be associated with renal calculi. It can coexist with emphysematous cystitis (see Chapter 39).
