21 Empyema
Background
Empyema refers to an infected pleural space collection, and as such most commonly accompanies pneumonia (see Chapter 8). The condition carries a high mortality rate and appropriate management is by drainage of the empyema.
Clinical features
Signs and symptoms are those of pneumonia with an effusion. The patient is usually unwell.
