Plain films are not requested specifically to look for gallstones as they are only radio-opaque in 10% of patients – ultrasound is the first line if they are suspected. But gallstones may be seen if a plain film is included in the work-up of a patient with abdominal pain, and they may be the cause of the patient’s presentation.
