KEY FACTS
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
Transverse US shows the tightly packed extensor digitorum tendons 
on the dorsum of the carpus.
Transverse US of the dorsal aspect of the metacarpal bones shows the extensor digitorum tendons 
diverging to the individual fingers. Each tendon should be followed individually in the transverse plane initially.
Graphic shows the arrangement of the extensor tendons on dorsum of fingers. Note radial and ulnar sagittal bands 
, deep transverse metacarpal ligaments 
, extensor hood 
, and absence of central extensor tendon on proximal aspect of the middle phalanx 
.
Transverse US of the dorsum of the metacarpal head 
of middle finger shows radial 
and ulnar 
sagittal bands overlying extensor tendon. The sagittal bands attach to the volar plates on palmar aspects of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints.

Specifically Examine
Ring and middle fingers have 1 extensor tendon, remaining fingers have 2 extensor tendons
Radial and ulnar sagittal bands (dorsal hood) help maintain position of extensor tendons on dorsum of metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint
