16 Lung metastases – multiple pulmonary nodules Fig. 16.1A This radiograph demonstrates several round soft tissue nodules of varying sizes. This patient has multiple lung metastases. Background This is an appearance that any doctor interpreting chest radiographs may encounter, and may be seen on-call as well as in the outpatient clinic. It is important to make an accurate diagnosis and correctly manage the patient as there is a considerable differential diagnosis. In the patient whose radiograph demonstrates several rounded soft tissue lesions the diagnosis of metastases should be considered, particularly if the patient has a known primary cancer. The patient may also have symptoms relating to lung metastases, such as breathlessness and weight loss. Differential diagnosis Most causes of solitary pulmonary nodules (Chapter 15) can also cause multiple nodules.
