Abstract

This essay is an update from the preceding one, written 8 years before. Incorporation of radiologists of Indian ancestry into all segments of American radiology has occurred despite the united reserve previously cited. The number and percentage of South Asians continues to grow remarkably. In short another example of the typical American success story.


This essay is an update from the preceding one, written 8 years before. Incorporation of radiologists of Indian ancestry into all segments of American radiology has occurred despite the united reserve previously cited. The number and percentage of South Asians continues to grow remarkably. In short another example of the typical American success story.

Immigration, integration and assimilation are three salient features of the American experience from the founding of St. Augustine, Jamestown and Plymouth to today. At times, barriers to these processes have been raised and at other times lowered. And today at least for legal immigration they soon may be readjusted through legislation. The vagaries of politics aside, we as a nation are in great measure the products of the efforts of migrants to our shores. For most of us, if we are not newly arrived here ourselves, we are also their descendents. So the study of migration can be fascinating not just as for the knowledge it imparts but also for the relevance of that knowledge to our understanding of what we are and appear to be.
