Background A viral aetiology for pneumonia is particularly common in children although it can also occur in adults. Viral pneumonia has a different pattern to bacterial pneumonia on a CXR. The CXR appearances of viral pneumonias are generally non-specific but certain appearances can suggest the diagnosis. Children generally develop a mild self-limiting illness.
