Clinical Presentation
A 51-year-old woman with a history of ovarian carcinoma now has back pain and abdominal distention.
Anterior and posterior whole-body bone scan images demonstrate multiple osseous foci as well as diffuse, mildly increased abdominal soft-tissue uptake (circle).
Differential Diagnosis
• Malignant ascites (with possible bone metastases): A diffuse increase in soft-tissue uptake occupying the entire peritoneal cavity makes this the most likely diagnosis, given the history. And although the anterior rib lesions appear posttraumatic, the more lateral rib and the spine lesions are more suspicious.
