Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CNIX)
Main Text
TERMINOLOGY
Abbreviations
IMAGING ANATOMY
Overview
Intraaxial Segment
Motor fibers to stylopharyngeus muscle originate in nucleus ambiguus
Sensory fibers from tympanic membrane, soft palate, tongue base, & pharynx terminate in spinal nucleus CNV
Taste fibers from posterior 1/3 of tongue terminate in solitary tract nucleus
Parasympathetic fibers to parotid gland originate in inferior saliva to ry nucleus
Cisternal Segment
TZ is area between central & peripheral myelin with increased vulnerability to mechanical irritation & relevant in neurovascular compression
REZ is portion of nerve, including TZ, central myelin root portion, & adjacent brainstem surface
Glossopharyngeal neuralgia caused by neurovascular compression occurs 95% in proximal REZ, overlapping proximal location of TZ
