26 The most common neoplasms to be found in the jugular foramen are paragangliomas (glomus jugulotympanicum), schwannomas, or meningiomas (Table 26.1). A mimic of pathology in this region is heterogeneous enhancement within the jugular bulb on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to mixing of blood and turbulence. A number of developmental variants also occur in this region, often better delineated on computed tomography (CT). Schwannomas of the jugular foramen usually arise from the ninth (glossopharyngeal) nerve and are rare.
