Treatment plan checking
A treatment planning system will be tested during commissioning and this will include evaluating correct data transfer to the record and verify network and treatment unit, and comparing the dose delivered to a phantom with that calculated by the treatment planning system. However, there is an ongoing requirement to check individual treatment plans as each plan is unique and may be susceptible to both operator and inherent software errors. The checking process should be a thorough review before releasing the plan for treatment and is to some extent dependent upon local equipment and practice but should include the following:
• the appropriateness of the plan (does it follow protocol), is any complexity, or a non standard plan justified
• no collision of patient, immobilization devices etc., with the treatment head
• beams passing through the couch or immobilization devices are not significantly attenuated or the transmission has been corrected for
• correct patient data used and identified, correct image registration if applicable
• correct prescription, including dose per fraction
• PTV coverage and dose homogeneity in all planes and organ at risk doses evaluated by DVH and inspection of each slice
• isocentre position set up instructions are correct and unambiguous
