Soft Tissue Tumor Biopsy
KEY FACTS
Terminology
Procedure
Transverse US shows a large (5.1 cm wide x 3.6 cm deep x 8.1 cm long) soft tissue tumor involving the vastus lateralis with partial involvement of the intermedius. Mild hypervascularity
is present. Note the femoral shaft
.
Transverse US during percutaneous biopsy with coaxial system is shown. Always obtain at least 1 biopsy close to the tumor edge
to optimize yield. US cannot always clearly delineate the area of tumor necrosis centrally.
Longitudinal US shows a Tru-Cut biopsy of a soft tissue mass
in the peroneal muscles. Multiple biopsies are taken along different paths using a single skin puncture and coaxial needle. Note the gas-filled tract
from a previous biopsy. Histology revealed pleomorphic undifferentiated sarcoma.
Longitudinal US shows a 20-g end-cutting needle (Franseen) within a groin lymph node
in a patient with melanoma. Histology revealed metastatic melanoma.
