Fig. 10.1

Technique

• A 20 mCi dose of 99mTc-MDP is administered intravenously.

• Whole-body images of the skeleton are obtained 3 hours after tracer administration.

• A 1024 × 256 matrix is used for whole-body images.

• Emphasize the importance of oral hydration to improve soft tissue and bladder clearance.

Image Interpretation

Whole-body images in the anterior and posterior projections (Fig. 10.1) show relatively increased tracer concentration in the metaphyses of the long bones, particularly in the lower extremities. Also noted on the posterior whole-body image is tracer concentration just above the left kidney. Increased uptake within the calvarium and right orbit is best seen on the anterior view. Uptake in the left first metatarsophalangeal joint is related to post-traumatic/degenerative changes.

Differential Diagnosis

(Symmetric periarticular tracer uptake)

• Osteoarthritis

• Rheumatoid arthritis

• Other arthritides
