Angiomyolipomas with Minimal Fat

A threshold value of ≤ –10 Hounsfield units (HU) can be used to differentiate renal angiomyolipoma (AML) from other renal lesions.¹ However, intratumoral fat in AMLs may not be detectable on computed tomography (CT) in 4.5% of cases.² In these cases, it is often not possible to distinguish an AML from a renal cell carcinoma. Features that suggest the diagnosis of AML with minimal fat in these cases are²^–⁴
