81 Uptake of supraparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) particles reflects reticuloendothelial system activity. Uptake of SPIO agents in the liver is detected as signal loss on T2*- or T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (T2WI). Most focal nodular hyperplasias and adenomas have detectable SPIO uptake, but less than normal liver.1,2 However, the degree of signal loss in these lesions can be comparable2 making differentiation between the two lesions by SPIO imaging difficult.
