I wish to thank Dr Kevin DeMarco for guest-editing this issue on carotid plaque imaging. This topic is obviously very important and constantly evolving. The focus of this issue is the clinical applications of modern plaque imaging. Dr DeMarco has assembled a talented group of international experts to author these excellent reviews on the “current state” of carotid plaque imaging. There are articles dedicated to 3D MR imaging of carotid plaque, computer-assisted analysis of multicontrast carotid plaque MR imaging, ultrasound (3D and contrast-enhanced techniques), and PET-CT and PET-MR imaging of carotid plaque. The issue also includes an essential article on the clinical impact of plaque imaging that underscores the importance of what we do and also why further investments in this field are clearly needed. The authors have done an amazing job with their contributions, and I want to thank all of them for their efforts and commitment to this wonderful issue.

On a personal note, I have had the pleasure of working with Kevin for the past three years in the Department of Radiology at Michigan State University. Kevin is really an extraordinary individual whose unbridled passion for carotid plaque imaging is only superseded by his devotion to his family. I was delighted when Kevin accepted this invitation but am even happier to call him a friend. Thank you, Kevin!
