The Differential Diagnosis of Leiomyomas


Leiomyomas are sometimes difficult to differentiate from ovarian lesions (see Chapter 112), or other uterine abnormalities such as leiomyosarcomas or adenomyomas.


Leiomyoma versus Adenomyoma


Differentiation of leiomyoma and adenomyoma (Table 108.1) is important as leiomyomas can be treated with a myomectomy, but adenomyomas require a hysterectomy. Submucosal leiomyomas in particular may be difficult to differentiate from adenomyoma.
