Tracheobronchomalacia
Tracheobronchomalacia refers to a weakness of the trachea, usually due to reduction and/or atrophy of the longitudinal elastic fibers or due to impaired cartilage integrity. Normally, the intrathoracic trachea dilates somewhat during inspiration and narrows with expiration. Tracheobronchomalacia allows an exaggeration of this normal physiologic process that may result in dynamic and ultimately even a static airway obstruction. This tracheal abnormality may be diffuse or focal.
