98 Chemical Shift: Sampling Bandwidth


Chemical shift, a common source of artifacts, occurs in the readout direction. The artifact due to chemical shift is most evident in MR images at the interface of tissues with significantly different fat and water contents. In Figs. 98.1 and 98.2, the readout direction was top to bottom. The sampling bandwidth of a pulse sequence (given in Hz/pixel on each image), specified prior to scan acquisition, controls the magnitude of the effect. The lower the bandwidth, the more prominent the artifact. The artifact from chemical shift appears on images as artifactual bright (black arrows) or dark (white arrows) lines at fat/water interfaces (Fig. 98.1
