CPC

Fig. 1: Position of the probe, subcostal oblique – CPC.

This section is known as the shoulder-navel section because of the orientation of the probe, or the CPC section (common bile duct, portal vein, vena cava) because of the visualized entities:

  • Common bile duct
  • Portal vein (landmark)
  • Vena cava
  • Proper hepatic artery

The portal vein enters obliquely into the liver. It is found on the imaginary line between the right shoulder and the navel. One usually obtains an oblique view. It may be a little difficult to rotate the probe so that the portal vein is viewed lengthwise. The magnitude of rotation differs from patient to patient. It may be steep, as for a longitudinal section, or flat as for a cross-section. The three structures of the hepatogastric ligament are seen on this view: the portal vein, the common bile duct, and the proper hepatic artery.
