29 Dorsal Scapular Nerve Imaging

The dorsal scapular nerve (DSN) arises from the C5 ventral ramus and frequently contains contributions from C4.¹ The nerve is usually considered part of the brachial plexus. The DSN pierces the middle scalene muscle to innervate the rhomboid muscles and also supplies some of the motor branches to the levator scapulae. The nerve joins the dorsal scapular artery that usually arises from the transverse cervical artery. There is no cutaneous innervation of the DSN.
