High Field Imaging

William G. Bradley Jr, MD, PhD
Professor Willinek has done his usual excellent job bringing together top experts for this High Field Imaging Issue of Neuroimaging Clinics. This, of course, is not unexpected given his involvement over the past 12 years with the High Field Imaging Symposium at the University of Bonn and his current position as President of the International Magnetic Resonance Angiography Working Group (aka “MR Angio Club”).

Professor Willinek has included all the topics in which higher magnetic fields are useful for both clinical and research work, by virtue of either higher spatial resolution, thinner slices, or faster scanning. These topics include high field clinical imaging of brain tumors, epilepsy, inflammation, neurodegeneration, and stroke as well as MR angiography of the brain and neck and plaque imaging. Perfusion imaging at 3 T in the context of stroke and tumor grading is discussed in detail. To round out the other areas of Neuroradiology, there are excellent articles on high field MR imaging of the head and neck, spine, and children. Finally, there are articles on research applications at ultrahigh field MRI and a look into the future of high field imaging.

The contributors are all experts in their subspecialty areas and come from eight different countries, making this truly an international effort well beyond North America. In reading the various contributions to this issue of the Neuroimaging Clinics , it is clear that high field MRI has evolved into a very solid clinical modality with many options for future research at high and ultrahigh magnetic fields.
