25 Double-Outlet Ventricles
With Kevin S. Roman
Definition
- A type of ventriculoarterial connection in which both great arteries arise completely or predominantly from either the right or the left ventricle. Double outlet left ventricle is exceedingly rare.
- Almost always associated with a ventricular septal defect
Classification of Double-Outlet Right Ventricle
- Classification is based on the location of the ventricular septal defect relative to the aortic and pulmonary valves (Fig. 25.1).
Fig. 25.1 Classification of double-outlet right ventricle according to the location of the ventricular septal defect relative to the arterial valves. Ao, ascending aorta; d, ventricular septal defect; IS, infundibular septum; PA, pulmonary artery; RA, right atrium; TV tricuspid valve.
